LFT responds to the tragedy in Lafayette

Statement by LFT President Steve Monaghan

(July 24, 2015) Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the senseless, tragic shooting in Lafayette last night. It is especially poignant to learn that two of the victims are our colleagues, high school teachers who were simply taking in a movie on a Thursday night.

Harford County Exec. Signs Contract for $1,000 Merit Raise

Barry Glassman, Harford County Executive, signed union contracts with Maryland Classified Employees Association (MCEA) and AFSCME. MCEA Union officials present for the signing were chapter president William Sullivan, VP Amanda Weyant, secretary Michael Hiob, treasurer Ray Crosby, and Michael Keeney, MCEA staff representative.

AAUP/AFT-Wisconsin Joint Statement on Wisconsin Biennial Budget

The AAUP and AFT-Wisconsin stand together in condemning the attacks on higher education that the Wisconsin Legislature included in its biennial budget, which Governor Walker signed into law last Monday. We call on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents and the UW System and campus-level administrations to work with their faculty and academic staff to reconstitute the language previously included in Chapter 36 into system-wide and campus policies.

As reported in our last negotiations update, N-MFT's bargaining team rejected what the District presented to us as their Last, Best, and Final offer on June 16, 2015. Since then, N-MFT leadership has addressed the School Board twice regarding our concerns with the District's Last, Best, and Final offer.

Baltimore at AFT TEACH 2015

Teachers, paraprofessionals, and AFT members and personnel from all over the nation came to Washington D.C. to take part in AFT TEACH 2015: Together Educating America’s Children. The three-day conference featured a number of panels, workshops, plenary sessions, and town halls all organized around the idea of improving the quality of public education for the nation's young people.
