Bill to Strengthen Violence Prevention in Healthcare Facilities Withdrawn

AFT Healthcare-Maryland president Debra Perry reports that a bill before the Maryland Senate intended to strengthen violence prevention standards in health care facilities across the state has been withdrawn.

Reportedly, the bill’s sponsor, Senator Katherine Klausmeier (D), was told by nursing home representatives that they already have sufficient standards and methods for dealing with workplace violence. Delegate Tom Hucker (D), who introduced a similar bill in the Maryland House of Representatives, expressed disappointment at the Senate bill’s withdrawal.

Maryland House, Senate Pass O'Malley Budget

The Maryland Senate passed Governor O’Malley’s budget with overwhelming support March 21. Only five Republicans voted against the budget, with seven Republicans joining 35 Democrats voting to support the budget.

The Maryland House of Delegates approved the governor’s proposed state budget March 15. The Democratic-controlled House voted 101-36 for the bill, largely along party lines. Both houses have approved a $36.8 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2014.

JFT, AFT contribute $2,000 to assist in search for Terrilynn Monette

March 21, 2013 -- The Jefferson Federation of Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers announced today a $2,000 contribution to a Crime Stoppers reward for information leading to the discovery of a missing Jefferson Parish, La., teacher, who disappeared during the early morning hours of March 2.

Terrilynn Monette, a second-grade teacher at Woodland West Elementary School in Jefferson Parish, has not been seen since celebrating with friends her Teacher of the Year nomination.

United Federation of Teachers Southern Section Meeting & Symposium

The United Federation of Teachers Florida Section provides assistance  to New York City retired teachers  who are in Florida. RC 43 TRIF Units provide assistance to retired teachers from the rest of New York State who also are in Florida. 

Both groups are part of NYSUT. In the spirit of unity we have been attending each other's meetings.
